Yesterday while visiting mom in MC, I offered her a Glucerna shake (nutrition supplement for diabetics). She looked at it as if it was the first one she'd seen, though she has them frequently. She drank some and set it aside.

After a while, I pointed to it and asked if she wanted to finish it. She picked it up and started reading the label out loud: "Nutritious Vanilla Shake." With an "aha" look on her face, she shouted "SHAKE!" and began to shake the bottle vigorously. I jumped from my seat, thinking that the cap was loose and we'd be sprayed with Glucerna. But no, the cap was on securely. I sat down and started laughing at my own reaction.

At that moment, a resident who spends most of her time wandering and mumbling incoherently walked by. My mom, who rarely initiates conversation with anyone, looked at this woman, pointed at me (still giggling) and asked, "what's wrong with her?" The mumbling woman looked at me and said, loudly and clearly, " I don't know and I don't care!" I saw an aide stifle a grin as I fell out laughing again. Mom glared at me but it was good comic relief!
