POA or GUARDIAN

My bf who has EOAD is 44 years old. He has been fighting with "the man in the mirror" for the last solid week if not longer.

My question is I am currently his rep payee for his disability check, but what is best so that I am not responsible for his debt when he passes (not that we are close to that) but if he has to go into a home would I want to be POA for medical and finances OR become a guardian?

I want to be able to make decisions for him and not give full care to the state or facility when the time comes.

I’m not sure there will be a practical difference. Have you consulted an attorney? Certified elder law attorneys have the expertise you need, look for listing by location at nelf.org.
