On the last day to file taxes, my dad calls me and asked if I could take him to the tax office and get the tax forms. It's my fault that I didn't remind my dad to file it on time. But I don't think he can do it himself without help. I got him an extension and I will make sure he gets it right.

I have been having my parent’s taxes done at the same accountant that does ours. I take everything in mid-February and pick it up about a month later. We used to be self-employed and we just kept the same tax service after we weren’t.
My spouse is a railroad employee and reporting that income seems complicated to me.

You probably need to deal with your parents at the same time you do yours. If nothing else, sit at his table and do it with him at your convenience - much earlier than April. However you could first try telling him that you get yours done at x, and you could take his stuff there too. He may be relieved.

It's time that you 'remind' you dad early in Jan or so that he needs to get his paperwork in order. In Feb 'remind' him again. Then either make the time to sit with him and do it together or take it to an accountant. Make it easier on the both of you.

I don't file taxes. I'm disabled and can't work. I need to see if my parents will let me get access to their financial papers. This is the first time I have to oversee filing their taxes. I don't know how to file taxes. If my dad can't do it, hope he will let someone else file for him. My dad was a computer accountant before. Now his dementia is affecting his abilities. At least he has till October to do it.

If he is having trouble with taxes, what about monthly bills? If he has dementia he may not know he is not capable of doing them himself. My mom fell 6 times in 6 months and used a walker, but still thought she was perfectly capable of mowing her own lawn.

My dad can't pay bills anymore. My mom has taken over the responsibility. The thing is that dad has vascular dementia and my mom has MCI borderline Alzheimer's dementia. Although my mom is dad's caregiver, she has short term memory and confusion. I see them every week to take care of administrative duties. My nephew and I have POA. I really need to see a lawyer. So many issues/questions.

My dad shouldn't be handling his taxes because of his dementia. I need to find someone who can. I don't know if my parents want to pay for a CPA. But who else can do it....me?

since you and your nephew both have POA, it’s one of you twos’s responsibility to see that the taxes get done. I would not trust your mom to do it.

FYI - it costs my parents $160 to get their taxes done. Their taxes are simple though.

QBC, the DPOA is in effect only when my mom is declared incompetent. She is not there yet. My dad never initialized a POA. I think my mother would be responsible for my dad. But I can still help my dad to file his taxes whether he does it himself or with a tax preparer. Idk, any suggestions?
