We live in an apartment in a retirement community. They have MC, SNC, AL, and Adult Daycare on the premises also. I recently asked our Manager what I would need to do if my DH needs SNC in the future. She said we would get a bed for him with a Medicaid Waiver and then apply for Medicaid (he would definitely qualify). Since this seems pretty easy, would there be any advantages to applying for Medicaid sooner? Would he be able to keep his current doctors if he goes on Medicaid? That’s my biggest concern since he has recurrent bladder cancer and has outpatient surgery occasionally.

it’s all about what you have in assets and income. Each State different limits

Before you apply for Medicaid for when he is still living with you( not in any of the care levels you mention), call your doctor ask if they take your state’s Medicaid health coverage. I do not believe Medicaid waivers apply if not in a facility- just the Medicaid health coverage is applied

Once you place him in any of the levels of care you mention, you will want to apply for Medicaid Waivers so that at least some of the expenses are covered. Medicaid Waivers allow a person to get coverage for some of the care in the facility.

Then there is institutional Medicaid- which pays for care in facilities that accept it in your state. Since you were told about Medicaid waivers by a professional, my guess is that AL and MC may not be eligible for institutional Medicaid in your state
