Suprapubic catheter

I'm thinking to have my dad try a suprapubic catheter as opposed to a Foley catheter. I will talk to his urologist next month about it. My dad is unhappy changing his catheter every month. However, I read that he still needs to change the suprapubic catheter every 4 to 6 weeks. But is it also painful? What if he gets an infection? He's allergic to penicillin and gets delirium under anesthesia and he has a bad reaction to strong pain meds. But I'm sure there's other kinds of meds that he can tolerate. These and other issues are needed to be addressed to the urologist. Anybody have experience with this?
