I really understand how important it is to take care of #1. Yesterday I had a meltdown. I have been dealing with chronic insomnia lately and it was making me stressed out emotionally and physically. I couldn't think clearly and I felt overwhelmed thinking about the next step on how to take care of both mom and dad with dementia. I had to take a break from this forum for a day cuz it was upsetting me. I know the suggestions you guys were giving me but I didn't think I was capable of doing anything. I wanted out of the decision making and responsibilities required of being POA. I was having a bad day. Sleep deprivation does that to me. Gratefully, I had a good sleep last night so I'm thinking more clearly and better attitude and more energy to tackle the day. Do one thing at a time and one day at a time.

So glad you got some rest. I post a lot here about self care because for so many reasons caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s (i can’t imagine caring for both parents) is exhausting and stressful. Mentally, physically, and there are so many financial and medical details.

You sound like you are doing everything right by your parents. Including taking care of #1. You absolutely need to in order to get through this. Good night sleep, time outdoors, a meal with friends, a bath, a run, whatever…even small moments are so important. Glad you got sleep.
