My dad was just put on hospice. I know some of you had LO that were on hospice but was eventually discharged. What would disqualify a person from hospice?

Usually that their condition has improved. They are reassessed in 90 days I believe to see if their health has changed. I think this is fairly rare with dementias, which are usually a downhill situation

I’ve been a Hospice RN for 15 years and a person may be discharged if they improve or even if their condition remains the same. Medicare requires us to re-evaluate their eligibility at 90 days, 90 more days, and then every 60 days. You have the right to appeal the decision to discharge if you disagree.

I hope dad continues to have hospice. I know he can be difficult. Refusing care, etc.

    Re Hospice…
Do you have to have to be determined to have 6 months of less to have hospice care?

Welcome to the forum livefree. No, you don't, especially with dementia.

An example would be: if excessive weight loss was what qualified a PWD for Hospice, gaining a significant amount of weight might be why the PWD is released from Hospice care. With dementia, things only go downhill, so it would be rare to be discharged. My husband with EOAD was on Hospice for three consecutive years, until he died.

Thank you for your response and I will look into it. I had a meeting for mom at ALF today and they are suggesting we prepare ourselves for the next level of care due to her declining so quickly. She has been there a year and I’m sad but not surprised.

we are in a situation now where my father in law is being discharged from hospice. He is very late stage Alzheimer’s. Any guidance or advice you would give for the appeal?? He sleeps about 15-19 hours, 100% bed ridden, can’t feed himselfC diapers 24/7, losing weight, etc. My mother in law takes care of him 24/7 and is a retired RN. She cannot change him by herself due to his size. You can tell he is in pain!
