My mom stopped smoking in January, not because she wanted to but because it just wasn't safe so no one would buy her cigarettes' any longer. In early February she went into a SNF, there for 9 weeks. She came home and was doing find without cigarettes. It has been 6 months and she hasn't had a cigarettes. She had tried 3 times to leave the house to purchase them but unsuccessful so she kind of gave up. Now last week her cousin came to visit who was informed of my mom's situation from her sister and talked about how cigarettes' are not okay for my mom on many levels, safety being one of them. Well he bought her a pack anyways because my mom said she couldn't get out bc her car was broken ( that's the story I tell her) She is now acting out over not having them will throw her wallet and pull at her shirt when told someone will not get them. So one of my aunts felt bad and asked for my approval to get her cigs, bc I am POA. I said I would not give approval however I will not control what other people do, but it does affect my health when she smokes and I become sick with a sinus infection. She bought a pack anyway said it wasn't' right to withhold since she has smoked her whole life and what will it do to her now. Anyway my mom made my aunt mad bc she was not nice and refused to believe all the things cigs cause in her body. After this long story anyone have a LO that smoked and you stopped buying them for safety concerns. How did you handle a LO who acted out over cigs. She just becomes so hateful and mouthy.

Get her to her doctor and get her some nicotine patches.

If the patches don’t work , can you monitor when she has a smoke? Her behavior may be more attributable to the disease than not having a smoke, it’s another point of control she’s losing. Thus if you can monitor her outside for a smoke maybe that would give her some peace?

Unfortunately she can not have them due to vascular disease nor the pills to reduce cravings because they have caused suicidal thoughts in the past. It seems strange but this is what I have been told.

I can just imagine what you must be thinking of the cousins that bought them - especially the first one… ugh!

Could you use the low-dose gum or lozenges just enough to take the edge off? Maybe check with the pharmacist or doc first
