My dad just called me and asked me to help with filing his taxes. I'm going to gather as much tax paperwork and see a tax preparer who might do it for free, if possible. I knew it was a matter of time that he would admit he needs help.

That is interesting. Most would not admit they need any help.

MIL would never admit it. Glad you were watching out for him regardless.

See if you can find a copy of a previous years taxes. A lot of people keep the the tax documents with the completed tax form. You can make a list and check the documents off for this year as you find them. Each bank account, CD, brokerage account, annuity etc. should have a tax form. Look for any changes in accounts in the past year. If you have all the forms and a copy of last years taxes, any tax preparer should be able to help. If you cannot find a tax form, than it gets to be a bit of a headache.

Towhee, my dad didn't file taxes last year. He said he didn't have to. I'm going to gather all the tax documents from him and go to a tax preparer. Unfortunately he doesn't qualify for free tax filing due to his assets. My dad is confused about how to do it. He used to be a computer accountant.

Try AARP. They used to have a a program of volunteers who are IRS certified and do taxes for free. I had a late family member who volunteered for it and they were very well trained and diligent.

Your local Senior Center may have resources for you. My late FIL did taxes every year for retired Civil Service employees thru the Senior Center program.

Ok Jeri Lynn, I have checked into several places but they don't offer free services because my dad has assets. He is probably going to have to pay to do taxes. I will continue to find an organization that can do it.

I also need to collect medical receipts of my dad's hospitalizations for tax purposes. My mom did not keep all his paid medical bills so I have to call the billing department for proof of payment. I'm going to visit my dad today and check on what tax papers he already has and make notes on things I still need to gather besides medical bills.

My dad has been efficient on collecting all the tax documents except for medical expenses because my mom did not keep any records if them! However, I was going to bring the documents to the accountant when my mom decided not for me to take them but instead let my nephew do it! I think she must be hiding some info from me. Last time I talked to my nephew, he didn't feel comfortable doing the taxes. I told my mom that and said I will handle it if my nephew continues to admit incompetence. She said ok.
