Financial Assistance

Hi! Is there any sort of financial assistance available for parents still living in their house with severe dementia (other than Medicare/IHHS?) in California? Either for my Dad or for me? I am full-time caretaker having to move here and go "visit" my own home back out of state once in a while. Been doing this the past few years and now it's a big financial loss for me. IHHS said his Medicare/Cal wants $3k out of pocket per mo from him in order for me to be his caretaker, which negates the point of IHHS $.

Have you talked to a certified elder law attorney CELA or your council on aging. There may be grants you can apply for or a way to get him on long-term care Medicaid. But you would need to talk to an expert in your state.

I just googled and it seems California has a Medicaid long term care plan that is aid for financially strapped individuals. It helps pay for in home service or long term care facility, but not at 100% and they do expect the individual to pay their fair share. It sounds very similar to what I got my mom here in FL. However, in reading your post it sounds like you’re more interested in getting a stipend for taking care of your parents so that you afford to visit your family elsewhere rather than pay for care for them. If they get approved there is an option where they can choose you as their caregiver and Medicaid pays you a predetermined of weekly hours. I opted to use in home health care for mom until her AL choice becomes available. It something you may want to research.
