Alz medication

My Dh was on namenda and was unable to take it . The neurologist put him on Donepezil hcl . Has been taking it for about 2 weeks. Has been incon of stool 2x now. Is this normal at first or is he progressing. Any way he refuses to take it now. We are running out of meds.

It could be the med or it could be progression.

Donepezil can cause loose stools. DH had a series of loose stools when he first started taking it, but then the issue resolved. Neurologist increased the dosage and the loose stools returned for a week or so, but then resolved again. A friend's DH had the issue never resolve and had to stop taking it.

I know this answer really isn't much help. But, with dementia, that's par for the course (in my experience). Sometimes things help. Sometimes they don't. (cue Almond Joy jingle)

If DH is refusing to take it, I'm not I'd push it. Donpezil doesn't change the underlying pathology.

My partner also didn't tolerate either one rhonda. I'd let it go.

My mom tolerated the 5mg dose of Donepezil- but she had bowel issues with the 10mg. So she had to go back to the low dose.
None of us are sure that the medications help anyway.

You might try Exelon patch. It bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and may be better tolerated.
