My LO and the hired caregiver issues

I am the significant other/POA and official caregiver for my LO. We have been together for 39 years but he now has mid stage dementia.

I hired a caregiver to help me at home, 3 times a week for 4 hours. The caregiver helps with toileting, bathing and household chores. The caregiver will keep him company so I can go out to the grocery store and run errands. However, my issue is that my LO will not listen to the caregiver. She tries to give him a shower, fix him lunch, chat with him but my LO just won't respond. So when I come home, he then responds to me.

What can I do to have him interact with the caregiver? Caregiver is excellent and very patient.

I don"t want to try someone else becos I feel he will act the same way.

if the caregiver is recently hired, I would give it some more time. Have her stick to some of the basics ( hand him a warm wet wash cloth before giving his meal to wipe hands and face rather than a full shower) and maybe cut back on chit chat . He needs to get used to her being there before he will accept personal care. Is he able to get himself to/from the bathroom? The first care giver I had for my HWD/Alz he said she talked too much! I am sorry this is so hard.

perhaps she doesn’t understand dementia. You can’t ask questions. There are tips the caregiver should know. My husbands caregiver just sat and listened to his stories. She never said or did much. I prepared his lunch before I left. Maybe you could stay one day and observe how she interacts with him? Maybe as others have said he just needs time to trust?
