Mom is nearing the end

I’m sitting with my mom at her MCU. She has deteriorated very rapidly, stopped eating, is mostly asleep and very minimally aware. I live 5 hours away and for a variety of reasons have not visited her in many months. Fortunately until recently we had wonderful phone calls and she always knew it was me. I wish I had come down but trying to give myself grace. In anticipating this visit I was absolutely terrified to see her. But now that I’m here all is calm. Periodically I shower her with kisses and she laughs. I’ve never witnessed the dying process and I feel like what’s happening is a deep turning inward and profound fatigue. So far she is comfortable and not distressed. The staff here is wonderful and hospice is supportive. It’s possible (definite?) that it may get more difficult, but for now it’s peaceful. While I know others will have a tougher death experience with their loved one, I hope sharing my experience will assuage some anxiety and bring comfort.

You are blessed in having a peaceful time. May it continue until your mom’s departure from this earthly world.🙏🏼

I am glad you are there and hope that it does remain peaceful. The vast majority of us are unfamiliar with dying-- such a cultural change in the last 75 years really. I hope you're not afraid. Assume she can hear you. Keep us posted, we will be thinking of you.
