Somewhat off topic--a question about underpads

I had been using pet pee pads beneath my 19 1/2 year old blind cat, Simon. He sleeps a lot, and at night he usually doesn't make it to the litter box. But every morning the pee pad was soaked and leaked onto the floor. I tried different brands, they all leaked. Then I read about using underpads that are used for incontinent people, so I got some. Even these leak! I was surprised. We used to use these in the hospital. Is there a secret that I am not using? I want to know how to keep the urine confined to the underpads. I might try getting him to sleep on an adult diaper, that may be more absorbent.

Are his claws making tiny holes in the plastic? Is he peeing off the edge of the pad? I had an elderly cat with a similar problem, she was perching on the edge of the box opening and peeing outside the box. I put her litter box and pad on a plastic tray to catch the leaks. I think part of her problem was that she was dripping pee while getting to the box and then would later recognize the urine smell on the pad as a good place to stop and pee fully. You may have to put something waterproof (a vinyl tablecloth?) underneath the pee pad to catch the overflow. Good luck with solving the problem!

I would order a waterproof crib sized mattress pad to go under some larger "pee pads" and around the area.

Thanks for posting, fmb and jfkoc. I found some "leakproof" underpads at CVS, I'll try them.

Disappointment: the "leakproof" underpads leak, too. I think I'll try an adult diaper, unfolded.
