How to get prescription meds in the first place

My husband refuses to be tested and dislikes taking meds. He desperately needs meds for obsessions and anxiety. He is a great show timer at the doctors office. I have talked to him about his anxiety. He says he knows himself better than anyone and he is not anxious. I keep reading how others hide the medicine in food. A great idea but how do you get it in the first place? I approached our primary doctor once about prescribing something and saying it was to help with his blood pressure. He does take bp meds. She was reluctant and I get it but he really needs something for both our sakes. He is 6plus years in with some sort of FTD, I believe, and his doctor concurs. Any ideas or thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Pat do you hold his powers of attorney? Because you may need them to force the issue. If you can't handle him at home it may require hospitalization. I'd research which hospitals near you have geri psych units.

Maybe approach your PCP again and be very clear that you need help with this. Make sure they understand the difficulty you are having. The PCP should be willing to prescribe what you need, or provide a referral to geri pscyh, neurologist, or other specialist to get the meds needed for your DH.

It wasn’t until I wrote down all of my DH’s behaviors prior to his Dr appt, and then handed it to the nurse, so the Dr could read it before coming in the room that meds were prescribed. (My DH also show times at the Drs). After the Dr read my notes, he prescribed meds that day. When PWD show time, and we can’t really say what’s going on in front of them, the Drs think everything is going good.

in addition to what jsps139 suggested, can you get short videos on your phone to show his PCP?

Such good advice! I am determined to get him help. I see our primary next month and am going to really push for meds. I will have a list of behaviors and try to get some audio of him as he rants. And thank you Charley. Putting his med in a vitamin bottle would definitely work.

Pat, i wouldn't wait for your appointment. If you're a squeaky wheel now, they can call something in for you to try. You've put up with enough already.

the medications can help. Push hard for them. I lie to my DW everyday to make her think they are just vitamins. She doesn’t understand why she takes them. I tell her it is for it’s for brain health so she won’t have a problem later in life. Good luck.
