I am starting to look at MCFs for my DH as a backup plan for now but I do think I’ll end up placing him within the next year. So far I have only looked at 3 institutional MCFs with 20-30 beds. Some people have suggested that I look at the smaller Adult Care Homes. My DH is very private, doesn’t always want to talk to other people tho does enjoy watching people, likes it quiet (he’ll get up and go into the other room if I’m watching a tv show he isn’t interested in), and yet I think he needs some socialization. I’d love to hear what kind/size of places people have picked for their LOs and how it’s worked out.

I placed my DH in a medium sized facility. At the time I didn’t realize it was mostly women. They got on his nerves. He did have his own room but he couldn’t keep it locked. He would join in activities and eat in the dining room. I was fortunate to move him to a VA facility where he was much happier. I think a smaller home might be better based on your comments about him liking quiet. Please keep us posted.

I was not involved much in the decision process, but my mom has been very happy with a locally owned CCRC with a nursing facility that can also provide memory care for our PWD. It has long term staff, relatively low staff turnover, and the quality of care has been very good. It’s not part of a chain. I don’t know if it accepts Medicaid for long term care. My mom lives in an independent living setting on the same campus and walks to visit daily. I hope this is helpful and wish you the best.
