I am so sorry that you are at this point in your journey. The human body is nothing short of miraculous. It knows when it is time to die and begins to shut down. Food and liquids are no longer being absorbed and can actually become harmful to the body, so appetite and thirst diminish. As the body efficiently uses its reserves, weight is steadily lost and ketosis sets in. Dulled pain receptors induce a sense of euphoria, and calcium build up leads to increased tiredness and more sleep. From now on, Joy is the engineer on this train. Your hospice team will gently guide you through the next days/weeks. We become simply bystanders in this miracle of natural death.
For more info about the process of natural death, see the Hospice Nurse Julie videos (on YouTube and TikTok).
