My mom's MCI is getting worse. How do I get my mom to the doctor to declare her incompacitated? What kind of fiblets can I use to coax my mom to see the doctor? I'm going to schedule a visit to her PCP and see if she can get a referral to see her neurologist to conduct a neuropsychological test to determine how impaired she is. I had a neuropsychological test myself and some parts can be difficult and complicated and I think my mom won't be able to do a lot of it. Once the POA is activated, I can handle her finances and I can get my dad placed in a MC facility or care home since my mom won't be able to take care of dad anymore. I also need to place mom in assisted living. How do I go about placing them? What should I say to them that they need to go to a facility? However they can only afford a limited time at a facility and then they have to qualify for Medicaid. Being appointed as POA is a lot of responsibility and I hope I can do it.

Im not totally sure but I think you need a letter written and signed by two doctors. I don’t think they would necessarily need to be neurologists. But I do think they might be more willing. Mom’s neurologist seemed to think we would need the letter. I figured if they are willing it’s better to have it and not need it than not have it if it’s asked for. I also hunk it helped open my brothers eyes a bit to the whole situation. I hope it goes well. As far as doing the finances, there is still a lot you can do without the DPOA activated. Gather their bills fill out the check and have them sign and mail it. Look through bank statements for anything suspicious. If you ask their permission you could set up online banking for them. Being DPOA is very nerve wracking. I just recently posted a question about how to pay for assisted living. There are so many moving parts to this crazy puzzle. I hope it goes well.
