Expenses

Mom has early onset dementia. I am on her checking/savings accounts and have set most things up on auto-pay. There have been some monthly expenses that I have been paying directly and having her write me a check each month to pay me back. Is this a big no-no or red flag for Medicaid down the line? Or is it okay as long as I keep track?

You need detailed records to prove she wasn’t gifting you the money. The better way would be to write the checks to the store out of her account in the first place. Or to have a debit card to use. My name is on mom’s account and I have a debit card. I use it at the store to buy her groceries. I keep the receipt and put it in a notebook that I have. If I get her cash out of the ATM, I jot that down in the notebook etc.

I think that is not a good idea. I really don’t see a need to do it that way. If your name is on the account you can get a debit card or your own check book. I think you should even be able to sign her check( even if your name is not on the check itself, as long as it’s on the account). I would give the bank a call and see what your options are. You should save every receipt! I have an envelope for each month. All receipts go in the envelope and I record each receipt on the front of the envelope. Any checks written to you will appear to be a gift and gifts are a big no no.
