Don’t know who to address as question

for those of you who may not know me my wife is in a good place with this so far. Doesn’t drive, not interested in cooking. Has short memory loss and confused at times. Can be left alone and people surprised when I tell them. Ok question. Last 3 nights at same time she gets up to go to bathroom and pees on way. She’s aware of it and changes.i guess what I want to know is this the beginnings of issues.

Hi charley - Unfortunately, it may or may not mean it is the beginning of incontinence. But perhaps check for a UTI. MIL actually has a weak bladder, and that got worse as she got into a later stage of 'this'.

It could be. Loss of bladder control is common with dementia. You might want to consider pads or depends at night. Or maybe a bedside commode. Limit water before bed and remind her to use the bathroom before bed. The clean up is a lot of work. I’m not sure if a lack of bladder control can be a symptom of a UTI. It might be worth having her tested. I hope you figure something out.

nighttime depends would be a good idea. Does she have mobility issues and just doesn’t have time to get to the bathroom before she loses control? You might need to set an alarm a few minutes before her normal bathroom time.

Could be "female" related. I would speak with her PCP.

Just in case, get a 6 sided water proof mattress cover and a waterproof pad.

Is she being medicated with anything at bedtime or in the evening? If so, that may be warranted to be ruled out be an issue for what is happening.

It's likely the onset of incontinence. With young children, daytime dryness is achieved before nighttime typically; the regression of this ADL tends to follow this pattern of nighttime accidents first. Now is the time to protect the bed with a 6-sided waterproof cover and switch to something like Depends for overnights.

You could schedule an appointment with her PCP. If you do, I suggest you communicate your concern via the patient portal or discretely passed note if you know the topic would upset her. Medications like diuretics (in some BP meds) can play into this to some degree.

Are you sure it’s safe to leave her alone at this point? Would she know how to recognize and respond to an emergency? Not your question, I know, but in your post you mentioned she’s still ok being left alone. I wonder.
