DNA testing for kids

My DH was diagnosed with Alzheimer's five years ago (at 70) but had symptoms for at least 5 years before that. Both of his parents died at 60, so we don't know what might have happened had they lived longer. His brother had his DNA tested and had two copies of the 'bad' APOE gene and recently tested positive for Alzheimer's from spinal fluid (he is two years younger).

My stepson is very frightened at the prospect that he may have inherited the disease. I've offered to pay for DNA testing if he wants it, but I'm not sure how to find a reliable test with some sort of followup explanation. Does anyone have experience with this? I know this is probably the wrong forum, but I know you all….so…..advise away. Thanks.l

Here is an interesting article from the Mayo Clinic about genetic testing that may interest you. My husband and his siblings as well as their children have all discussed whether they wanted to do any genetic testing. After many discussions, all have decided that with or without carrying the genes, they could still get or not get alz. This article explains more.

My daughter did 23andme and found out she carries one APOE4 gene. I also did the test and don't carry the gene; that means the one APOE4 gene that my daughter inherited comes from her father. He has dementia. He has not tested. Both of his parents lived into their 90's without developing Alzheimer's even though at least one of them must have carried the gene.

after seeing my husband go through this terrible disease and since there is no cure, would not want to know if I carried the gene. I would want to live my life. My DH had symptoms for at least 3 years before his diagnosis that I attributed to age. We enjoyed 3 wonderful years of travel not knowing of his disease or future. I’m glad we didn’t know.

I would talk to an insurance broker before getting genetic testing. He might not qualify for long term care insurance and life insurance if he tests positive for some genetic conditions.
