going without mom to Social Security for request replacement card
tomorrow I am going in person to the Social Security office to request a replacement Social Security card for my mom. In the process of requesting the appointment the algorithm stated I would need "medical certification" why my mom could not present herself. Also, I am my mother's power of attorney; I do have that original paperwork.
I was wondering if other caregivers have dealt with a similar request and what has been your experience?
thanks,
Thomas Yun

I have always done this on Social Security’s website.
i set-up account online because I called Social Security for change of address and they had to speak to my husband first to verify his social security number and his voice was so low that they couldn’t hear him.We tried several more times and same thing. This was much easier for me to do it that way.
I would probably call and ask if you have the right documentation first.
Good luck !!

I would call or just go on the website. Honestly, I don’t know where my own card is. I took in a W-2 to our DMV to show my SSN for REAL-ID. They were happy with that. No one else has asked to see the actual card in years
The last time I changed my parent’s address on social security, I did it with a letter that I mailed to the local office with a typed signature. When I needed to talk to them about getting my step-dads’s death and getting mom’s spousal benefit chamber to survivor benefit… she had to be sitting right next to me and had to give them permission to talk to me

Thank you. I tried the online several times and it errored out and told me to go to the office. I surmise this is because there is a slightly different spelling of my mom's name on Social Security database compared to her passport and state ID.

Honestly, I just called, explained the situation—that I was assisting my mom in changing her home address to mine—and mom was able to confirm it on the phone. At that point she knew all her identifiers. (name, DOB, SSN). One thing that did help was calling the local office right at opening hours. That was during Covid, so not sure if you can still do that.

You can apply to social security to become your mom’s representative payee. I think it is form SSA-11. After they appoint you, you can act on her behalf.
