The above is the one of the best ideas I have learned on this site.

DW and I got home from a visit with our son this evening, and she got to complaining about the state of her wardrobe. This is a chronic problem. All 30 pairs of her shoes are "worn out", etc. I bought her a couple of new sweaters earlier this week, but she doesn't remember. She was descending to weeping and "I'm just worthless" so I quit reassuring she looks great and served us some apple pie. Worked like a charm. She forgot the clothes, enjoyed her pie, and suggested we watch TV. Watched Nature and Ask This Old House and went to bed. Magic!

Well done! Generally redirection works a treat for my DH too.

I’ve read this advice countless times…now if I could just remember and act on it in the heat of the moment! TY for the reminder!

This is standard teacher strategy. Good to know it works with people with dementia.

It's a life saver and often works here as well.
