A very little holiday
Maybe I have done something stupid but after hearing ‘friends’ talking about their cruising on boats and various holidays I decided that for our birthdays which fall on the 8th and 9th and the reason why 55 years ago we went out together, that we should have a little holiday, thinking that may be this will be the last. So I have booked 3 nights away in a cabin on the beach for me, my DH and puppy. We love the sea, it’s very tropical, quiet and private, puppy friendly. I couldn’t bear the thought of spending the time with any remaining friends or relatives so it’s just us. It’s a 300kl drive which should be fine but our routine of course will be broken. I’m just so worried that this will be too much. Can’t win with this horrible illness stay home and be board silly or change of scenery and be worried silly.

Funny…DH & I just returned from a very similar trip. 3 days in the Fl Keys in an adorable cottage right on the beach, with the dog…4 hr drive. I'm glad we went, as it will definitely be our last opportunity. There were moments of joy, but he did not do well at all with the change in his routine. He became so confused, and was up all night (which meant I was too). The last morning he didn't know who I was (first time that has happened) and thought we were going to meet up with his mother who died over a yr ago. He is much better now that we are home, and like I said, it was worth it to have one more adventure together. I hope you have a great trip…just hold on to the good parts.

It sounds so nice and certainly worth a try. Worse case scenario … you pack up and go home. Best case scenario … you made a very nice memory that will be with you always. Praying for things to go smoothly and enjoyable. Good for you - trying to make your birthdays special!!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. We had a little holiday in Brisbane in May staying 3 doors down from our son. It was sort of successful but yes a lot of confusion then of where we were. I'm hoping this stay on our own near the beach etc will be OK. It will probably be our last little adventure. Maybe prawns on the BBQ and a bottle of look-a-like champagne and some memories for our birthdays. Worth a try!

Great plan. I was able to get in a quick getaway to a Florida beach this past June with DH. My18 yr old granddaughter was happy to go along to help me with him. DH still wanted to spend hours sleeping but we were able to do most of the low-key things we had planned. DH ended up hospitalized for 11 days in August and I’m sure that trip in June will be his last. Things can change so quickly. It’s good to experience adventures while we can. Hope you have a great time.

Hi. I think that sounds wonderful! Happy birthday and I hope you have a wonderful time. In September, I booked a 4 day beach stay for my DH and I with the same concerns that you mention. The trip was wonderful and relaxing. He wasn’t as confused as I thought he would be. It ended up being just what we both needed. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday to both of you. It is better that you try and then you will never regret it and be thinking "I wonder if…. or I wish I had tried." Good for you.

It sounds lovely. Keep your expectations low and if you think he may be prone to wandering in a strange surrounding purchase an inexpensive door jam alarm for the bedroom door so you can get a good night's sleep. Cuddling on the couch, watching a movie, walking on the beach, exploring local shops and restaurants. Order a local bakery cake? Even an open collaborative Scrabble game? Enjoy!

You need to do it!! I scheduled me a 2 week condo on the beach as well!. Mama needed a Vaca…. After the first got lost upset…DH did well. We relaxed, walked on the beach, sat on balcony and watched people. I did however have to go buy the BEST binoculars for him to watch shrimp boats but it was well worth it!! Enjoy your trip!!

We did it, thank you to everyone who encouraged me. We had a lovely 4 days away and celebrated our birthdays 77 and 75 years, 53 years married! We celebrated everything we could, we talked and remembered our life together. It was a perfect place, in the middle of nowhere in particular, but a little haven. Gorgeous gardens, delightfully private but very friendly home away from home feeling. A host who understood our needs, a fenced in garden for our little dog and something just for me, my DH wasn't interested and couldn't manage it anyway, a cold private spar under the stars in amongst lush rainforest. Day 1 and my DH wanted to go home but after watching our puppy frolic around the garden with the hosts little dog and lots of sweet talk from me, he decided we would stay a little longer. We managed the four days really well but that was enough. So it was good to be brave!

I’m so happy to hear that it all went well and you had a wonderful time. It sounds like the perfect place and was probably good for him to get away too, once he settled in. Bringing the puppy probably helped a lot. And a belated Happy Birthday to both of you!
