Bedrail advice

My Dad keep saying his neck hurts because he falls out of bed at his facility. He has had a neck cramp since my mom died two months ago, so we really are not sure if he fell out of bed. He is in his own bed, which is a sleep number mattress on a sleep number box spring, on a typical bed frame. So any device can go under the box spring. He is pretty spry but has only been there 5 days and is very anxious and disoriented. Any ideas of a mattress cane or bed guard that can adjust?

You might try a fall pad on the floor, to cushion the fall if he is actually rolling out of bed. In my state, most facilities are not allowed to use bed rails. They are considered a restraint and are believed to increase the risk of falls, as residents climb around or over them to get out of bed.

I would also add to check with the facility before purchasing fall pads. At DH's facility they are not allowed because they are considered a tripping hazard.

Good point. That's the reason I don't use them for my mom.

My dad's facility allows for a Bed rail on one side only. I bought this, tested it myself, and it works great. It is not too wide, so he can swing out of bed easily. It is very sturdy, and makes it easier for him to push himself out of bed. Cut and paste the link below:
