This really set me back !!

my wife and trouble signing her name I think she had trouble with our last name. This really hit me. I guess more to come.

    That's hard. The name recognition issue around a last name does make sense given that memories and skills tend to be LIFO— last in, first out.

    I saw this with my dear auntie who had a 60+ year blissful marriage. As she progressed into later stages, she dropped her married name entirely. None of my mom's sisters were given middle names so they all used their maiden name (a short WASPY-sounding name) as middle as adults. Auntie just dropped the last one as she reverted in time to girlhood.

    I remember when my DH began having trouble with signing his name. Lately he prints it instead of signing and uses Tom instead of Thomas. When he signed his name on his mail in ballot, it was totally unrecognizable so I didn’t mail it in. First time ever he didn’t vote. Each setback is a gut punch, then we move on. Tough road.

    I have a picture on my refrigerator that my husband colored a few weeks in memory care. He signed his name on the bottom or at least he tried to. I see where he tried three different times and spelled it phonetically. It’s hard to watch the decline.
