A little humor

Maybe the last quip from MIL. She is in the “active dying” stage, mostly unresponsive. After spending a few hours with her this morning, I woke her up to tell her I was going home, I’d see her tomorrow, and I loved her. Although her speech is now hard to untangle, I swear she said “it was nice seeing you”.

I’m glad you got that response from her. I was reviewing my last several discussions here / trying to get the sequence of events of the last few weeks straight in my head. I realized my mom and your MIL went into hospice the same day and they’ve both declined rapidly since - It’s mind-boggling. Mom is also unresponsive.

I didn’t realize that! My MIL hasn’t had food or drink for 3 days now and today she was totally unresponsive. Every time hospice tells me it could be 4 or 5 more days I have a mini meltdown. I know in my heart she doesn’t want this. I hope your mother’s path is quick and peaceful.

@forbarbara Really similar paths. Mom hasn’t eaten anything for at least 4 days and last drank 2 days ago. I also got told several more days today. Her vital signs are still normal other than a heart rate of 123 ( which comes and goes). She started morphine yesterday because she is moaning, but she’s only gotten doses a couple times a day so far. They told me they could give me a better estimate once she got doses every two hours. It’s awful.

Humor always helps. I remember when my mom was in the "active dying" stage and I mentioned that everyone at church was praying for her. She responded, "Is THAT why I'm still here?!"
