Dementia at 45

I was diagnosed with HIV associated dementia after having imaging done due to behavioral and cognitive issues, and long term HIV infection. The last five years have been difficult alone, self isolating, now seeing problems completing everyday tasks or just takes a lot longer. I can't even get into the bathroom to brush my teeth or take a shower without getting distracted or getting to that task at hand. and so on. Just wonding if anyone else is coping with a dementia at a younger age or any resources out there for younger people

Welcome NeedtoTalk. I began having severe problems with memory and executive functioning at age 37, although I was not diagnosed as cognitive impairment not otherwise specified until age 58. My impairments were categorized as being due to systemic lupus beforehand. It was very hard. My mother had to come to help take care of me for a time.

Most resources for PWD (persons with dementia) are specified for adults over age 60. In your case, try to seek resources for people with brain injury. Most of these will be for people with traumatic brain injury or post-stroke injury. Seek out a rehabilitation department of a hospital that offers speech therapy, because that includes cognitive therapy for brain injury. You will have to be persistent. You might do better not to use the word dementia, because that could limit your options.

Since you are having trouble with your ADLs, kactivities of daily living), you might ask your health plan for an evaluation by a social worker. You might be eligible for a caregiver for a few hours a day. These programs can come under a heading of "independent living". I used such a program for a few months and it was a help.

You will have to make great adjustments to your living situation. You need a much simpler life. Please continue to post if you have more questions.
