24 hours of crazy

My husband has had a slow progression of Alzheimer's. Normal behaviors currently are frequent repeating the same questions, excessive sleeping, gets angry if I want him to do something like take a shower or brush his teeth. a day ago, out of no where…his speech was all jumbled, he was saying crazy things, didn't think he was home, pacing….it went on for 24 hours! I took him to the ER. All tests were normal. Even CT brain. Today he is back to his baseline and very exhausted. Has anyone had experience with a similar episode? Does this happen on occasion? He also lost control of bowels and bladder during the night when we got home from the hospital. The extreme behaviors for 24 hours were as if he took some drug that had him hyper and confused to the point of hallucinating even. Anyone experience this?

that must have been frightening. It sounds like delirium. It can be caused by many things. Medications, dehydration, UTI, and sometimes they find no cause. Did they specifically test for a UTI? Is he on any antipsychotic meds? Any of his other meds have confusion as side effects? Is he being treated by a Geriatric Psychiatrist? They are better able to manage meds. Make sure all his doctors know about the episode. My husband didn’t have that behavior but he did have 2 episodes of very high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, sweating. Went twice to ER and they never found any causes. Please keep us posted.

My DH recently went through something similar. Called 911 thinking he may have had a stroke. Medics thought the same thing. Even doctor's in the ER checked this first. He was admitted for 3 or 4 days and they found nothing wrong. He returned to baseline in about 24 hours. A doctor said it might just be related to the dementia but that was just a guess.

Have them do a spinal tap for syphilis.

    That's what our father has.
