Hours of PCA care

I remember my grandmother had 24 hour aides from Medicaid or Medicare in her last years of dementia (1989-1993). I was not too aware of what was happening at the time but I recall certain facts. My aunt lived with her and was her FT carer…did not have a job..and GM still got round the clock aides.

I am in the same boat as my aunt but with my partner. I’m currently getting an adult foster care stipend (untaxed) of $1520/mo. paid by Medicaid.

I can’t live on that & see myself caring for many years (until the end). I’m providing 24-hour care. I’d like to think I might be paid more as a PCA. It seems if someone can’t be left alone they should be entitled to 24-hr care. Even if I got 50 hours/week, I could live on that.

Anyone have experience with being or hiring a PCA for a PW ALZ? I will be making calls soon but I’d love to get some tips & anecdotal info.

I’ll share what I learn, too.

Thanks!
