Sitting Vigil

I am sitting vigil tonight at DH's bedside. It took three tries to insert a new Foley catheter this morning. Each insertion in recent months had been more and more difficult. He began bleeding out. He has an enlarged prostate and a latent tumor that he's had for 23 years. He may have a new tumor, too. He has lost a great deal of weight in the past few weeks and is aspirating more. The hospice nurse started oxygen and ordered morphine. The bleeding has slowed substantially, but his blood pressure is very low.

He is ready to die; his body is worn out. Last Rites were given. His daughters saw him this afternoon. All I can do now is be with him and wait for God to welcome him home.

I hope this is not inappropriate at this time but when my mom died with dementia I called her long time boy friend to tell him and he said "Oh good". That shocked me a little and then I realized what he was saying. He had seen a friend with dementia go through slow decline and he saw what it did to them and their family. He was not saying good that she passe but was saying good that her suffering had ended and the family would not suffer with her anymore.
