Adult Child Caregiver Support Group

I am new to this forum, but wondering if anyone has thoughts about an adult-child caregiver support group, particularly for caregivers at a distance. My mother is a widow and has MCI and may have mild dementia. We have a somewhat complicated relationship, but I am an only child and thinking of re-locating her to my area because it's been hard to manage everything at a distance and I am increasingly worried about her safety. I had identified the "perfect" place for her that I thought would offer community and more support, but she did not pass their cognitive screen and she was ambivalent about moving because she is not from this area, has few social contacts, and my wife and I have very busy work lives. I'd love to find a group of people who are going through this or something similar, but don't know where to find one. Does anyone know of any? I've tried several medical centers, geriatric centers, and other places and can't find one.

Hi, Alexi. You can see if there are local support groups near you, managed by the Alzheimer's Association. Near me, for example, the groups are for caregivers, or for persons with dementia and their caregivers. There aren't specific groups for adult children. But I have access to 12 different local caregiver groups! Some occur in the evening, some daytime, some weekends.

Even if there are people in these groups caring for a spouse, they likely have cared for their own parent at some point, and will be a good support for you. You can try the different groups and see if any feel like a good fit.
