Eating everything

husband with Alzheimer’s has no sense of being full after eating a meal. Goes directly for refrigerator for something else to eat. He has no sense, which I know is not his fault. I do all shopping, cooking, bills, pills, reminders for showers, wearing clean clothes, etc.

It sets me off when he cuts off a big hunk of Romano cheese to eat as a snack or scarfs down whatever he can find without leaving me my share. Is it time for home health before he drives me away, which is what he says I am doing to him? Hard to find happy place at home. Luckily I have other interests, but since he put leftovers on tin foil into the microwave (I caught it just in time before he pushed start) I can’t leave him alone much at all.
any tips for me?

I have no advice for you, but I’m hoping someone else does. My DH tends to snack on a few sweets and can’t remember if he ate a meal or not. He is the opposite of yours, he tends not to want to eat. I’m interested to see what others have to say. Wishing you the best.

CPC, I understand what you are saying. After much frustration I buy stuff he can snack on whenever he wants. Peanut butter crackers, individual string cheese, popsicles (sugar free), pudding cups and fresh fruits. Unfortunately the part of the brain that registers fullness is destroyed so they are clueless. Disguise or hide your own treats and have his easy to see. Best wishes!

My DH is just starting to do this. Baffles me. He has always been very self disciplined around food. He started the sugar cravings 6-8 months ago. Now he’s wanting meals - like at bedtime.

Just FYI, most microwaves have a way to lock the menu pad on the microwave - I think for ours, you hold the stop button for 3 seconds. Check your owner’s manual. If you don’t have the owner’s manual, see if you can find it online. Then come up with a fib for your DH for when he asks why it didn’t work when you were out!

I posted a thread a little while back similar to this; my DH was doing the same thing. Somebody suggested it might be medication and for us, I think that might be right. He’s on Escalitopram, but apparently there are many others that can increase appetite/cause weight gain. You may want to take a look…
