Long term concerns

Is anyone else in the US watching news stories and getting more and more concerned about the state of affairs outside of your situation that affect your situation?
All this talk about Medicare and Medicade cuts, stock market dumps, getting rid of the FDIC, etc.
It’s already stressful to be a caregiver. We already worry about money. But to be even more concerned that what has been earned could be gone at the whims of one man?

For my own mental health I've stopped watching the news. It's done wonders and I highly recommend it.

I stopped watching or listening to news about a year ago…can't believe I wasted so much time on it before…I highly recommend it too!

Almost the same here. I do catch the basic local news and the weather.
We have enough on our plate rather than worrying about the what-ifs.

The press is still trying to create panic. We need to be careful of what we watch and hear. We have been lied to for a long time. Medicare and Medicaid are not being interrupted or interfered with. Take a deep breath.

Medicaid is at risk under Trump. He and his MAGA pals blocked federal funding to all 50 states THIS morning. this could be catastrophic to all ALZ patients who rely on assistance from medicaid (as my mom does).

What he did does not affect Medicare or medicaid or any individual funding. Please do not create panic.

not true. Sadly you are being lied to by the media. Nothing to worry about.

The media is lying. That’s not what President Trump did. I would stop watching the news. Everything is fine. Tech stocks dropped due to a Chinese AI product. The stock market was up yesterday. Not to worry. Hugs

These posts show it’s hard to know what to believe. Who is really lying? I personally don’t put much stock in government (republican or democrat) or the media. On the other hand I feel like not watching the news is a bit like sticking your head in the sand. I want to be prepared if mom can’t get the help she needs, but I I have no idea what I can actually do about that.

I can help. I also don't believe politicians or the media. I've been researching things since 2003 when I retired. I go find and read the actual executive orders. They are on The White House website. President Trump did not issue any executive orders related to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. All that was paused was foreign aid to other countries, non profit agencies & international organizations or contractors. Here's what The Hill reported: "President Trump on Monday signed an executive order suspending any new U.S. foreign development assistance for three months, and directed a review of foreign assistance programs.
Trump is directing department and agency heads with responsibility for U.S. foreign development assistance programs to immediately pause new obligations and disbursements of development assistance funds to foreign countries; non-governmental organizations, international organizations or contractors.
The president calls for a review of these programs for “programmatic efficiency” and to determine whether they are consistent with U.S. foreign policy. The Office of Management and Budget will “enforce this pause,” the executive order states."
One of the non-profits filed to pause part of the executive order but I think the pause will be reinstated after the judge rules it's constitutional. The executive order was to reign in spending. President Trump has promised for 10 years he will not touch Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. He kept his promise his first 4 years & I believe he will keep his promise this term. But we'll be watching. Hope this helps. We don't need anything else to worry about.

Shame on you. No need to attack people who disagree with you politically. Medicaid funding was not blocked. The Trump administration emphasized in the memo’s fine print that assistance provided directly to individuals was excluded from the order. Specifically, the memo stated that when it referred to “Federal financial assistance,” saying, “This term does not include assistance provided directly to individuals.” It also specifically said “Nothing in this memo should be construed to impact Medicare or Social Security benefits.” The order stopped funding for foreign aid, aid to non profits & international organizations & contracts. Period.
But the media erroneously reporting caused the Medicaid portal to crash. The portal was back up within 24 hours.
Many of the social media claims suggesting that the funding freeze affected Medicaid, school lunches, and other direct aid programs were false. The memo explicitly exempted programs like Medicaid and federal student loans from the freeze.
An LGBTQ non profit filed a motion to stop the order. In the meantime, due to the media false reporting the Trump Administration has rescinded the order and may issue a new order for clarification.

I know hearing things that this causes anxiety. The media thrives on hysteria. I checked into the FDIC. President Trump said he's looking into moving it to Treasury, not getting rid of it. The stock market was up yesterday, down today. On November 1st, 2024 the stock market was 42,052.19. On November 6th, it was 43,729.93. Today it's 44,713.52. So again, not to worry. Hugs.

BREAKING: President Trump just dismantled the fake media narrative on the funding freeze.
TRUMP: I am restating right now - the media has purposefully created confusion... Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare have not been impacted by any action we have taken in any way, shape or form. We have stopped $50M that would've bought condoms for Hamas. We stopped an attempt to pay for illegal alien resettlement. We canceled $181M in DEI training contracts. $45M for diversity scholarships in Burma.

let’s stop please. This is not the forum to start discussing ‘ the fake media’ or shaming other members. etc. The members here come from all walks of life and from over the political spectrum. All of us are welcome here. And all should be made to feel comfortable here

Don't let others think for you. Especially if they are paid to tell you what to think.
After I decided people who spend hours a day getting their hair, make-up and wardrobe done probably aren't also spending hours researching I started looking for original sources [ like SDianeL described].
Watching FULL speeches-not clips , reading actual press releases etc. is eye-opening.

Thanks QBC!! What makes this forum so uniquely powerful in today’s divided social climate is that we are all on the same side, and working together to help each other overcome the horrendous challenges of this awful disease. Over the last couple of years I have not commented much. But, as my EO DW and I have struggled to deal with the myriad ways AD can destroy the life of both patient and caregiver, it has been a special gift to find an island of cooperation and constructive problem-solving in this forum. I have learned so much from so many of you without the distraction of political, social, religious, ethnic or other filters. To you all, I say “Thanks!”
There are other forums and information sources where we can seek answers to important political questions, which will allow us to remain united in our shared interests here. As a wise leader once said about working together in challenging times: “Be hard on the Problem and soft on the People”.
Cheers!-2 -
For those saying “He promised,” excuse me for not believing his promises.

howdoidothis : " But to be even more concerned that what has been earned could be gone at the whims of one man? "
Life is too short to come in here and have someone who says they are a TEACHER run fear mongering. You were asked to stop.
Maybe read this:
"No lie". That's how our government works.
Liked the math of the last President ? Felt "safer"?
buh-bye
