Hi, I need advice on how to approach this situation with my dad who has dementia. His girlfriend of 12 years that has been living with him, will now be moving out of state because she has health issues and will be cared for by her son that lives in another state. She’s been hospitalized the last 6 weeks and I have been my dads caregiver. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi 34laura - welcome to 'here', but sorry for the reason.

The first 2 considerations are paperwork and safety. You need DPOA and HIPAA accesses. You can check with a CLEC (lawyer specializing in elder law). A lot of times the medical accesses are included in the DPOA. HIPAA access can also be done right at the doc's office. The other issue is safety... no driving, takes meds correctly, eating ok, etc.

Not knowing what stage, you could start looking into adult daycare. This, so that you will be able to get a break, because 'this' isn't easy. You can look into the book "36-hour Day", and check out various posts here.

Sorry you are dealing with 'this'.
