Drivers License / State ID

Hello -

My Mom's drivers license is expiring next month. She currently is in Assisted Living with moderate symptoms. She is under Hospice care and Broda chair bound so there is no way I can get her to renew the license or really change it to a state ID.

Does she need a State ID? I checked and the only thing I can find is that she won't be able to file or taxes electronically without a DL# or State ID#. Which really isn't a big deal in my opinion.

I reached out to our BMV and they do have a "homebound" packet they could mail me and an agent would need to come to take a photo of her. It just seems unnecessary… or am I missing something??

Thank you in advance for your help!

I would get it. Some hospitals etc require an ID these days due to insurance fraud - people claim to be other people. I’ve had to show mom’s id a few times. Including once for something after she died - a bank if I remember correctly.

If she’s still considered competent enough to sign things, a notary ( including a mobile one) would be required to verify her identity,

No, she isn't able to sign her name. She has issues with motor skills… confined to a wheel chair and having issues feeding herself. All her food is cut up and she is now using her hands to feed herself. There is no way should could sign her name.

We got a state I’d for mom when she was diagnosed 2 years ago and have not used it yet. I do have DPOA and take care of all finances. She has not had a hospital visit yet so I can’t speak to that.

is the license renewal able to be done online? I held POA for my late FIL and renewed online, knowing he would NEVER drive again but so we would have it for banking, etc.

I went through months of visits to the DMV to get my mother a state ID(she moved to MN from AZ) It was a nightmare. Document after document, including the death certificate for her first husband who died in 1975. If I would have thought it through, I would have skipped the whole exercise. She never needed it once in the three years after that.(she was in AL + MC during that time)

Given that's it's something you can facilitate with a form rather than taking mom to the DMV, I'd make it happen.

We needed dad's ID for doctor appointments and if he'd needed admission to the hospital. We needed it to place him and I think the funeral home needed it as well although the latter might have been because of the veterans' cemetery.
