Inhaled aromatherapy improves cognition in those with cognitive impairment

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the whole article, but here are some of the key findings from this meta-analysis.

The effect of inhaled aromatherapy on cognitive function in patients with cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis

  • Inhaled aromatherapy improves cognitive function in patients with cognitive impairment.
  • Inhaled aromatherapy can be used as a complementary strategy in clinical rehabilitation with cognitive impairment patients.
  • Provide evidence-based medical proof for the use of inhaled aromatherapy in patients with cognitive impairment.

Results

We included fourteen studies involving 888 patients with cognitive impairment in our study. Meta-analyses indicated that inhaled aromatherapy increased Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE, mean difference MD = 3.89 95 % CI [3.19, 4.58], P < 0.00001) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA, MD = 4.11, 95 % CI [3.54, 4.68], P < 0.00001) scores and decreased Homocysteine levels (Hcy, MD = −2.27 95 % CI [−2.80, −1.74], P < 0.00001) in patients with cognitive impairment compared with controls.

Thanks for sharing this information. I found the full article.
I was diagnosed with MCI a few months ago but have had ongoing olfactory hallucinations for over 2 years. When the hallucinations become strong, I dab a drop of essential oil under my nose. That provides much needed relief. Interesting to think that it could be helping my cognition as well.

I am pleased to read and learn that the essential oils helped with your olfactory hallucinations and am hopeful that they will help with your cognition as well.

Did it say what kind of oils?

It did not say what kind of oils but Alzheimers.org.uk refers to limited studies about aromatherapy and mentions lemon balm. That’s what I use.

Lemon balm is a very good one as it can help with both calmness and cognition. Rosemary and bay laurel are good for cognition whereas lavender and sweet orange can help with sleep and relaxation.
