Mom needs help

My Dad, with VD, has been in AL under hospice for 4.5 months already. My mom has AD and has admitted that she has difficulty paying bills and gets frustrated when she doesn't understand things. As POA, I can take over the finances and any legal matters. I thought Mom was still competent handling finances but now she wants me to help her with it. Her Alzheimer's symptoms seem to be progressing. I wonder what is next...

You are very fortunate that she is asking for your help. So many refuse to accept help causing all kinds of problems and stress. I also started helping more with medication around this time. Mom is on a lot of different medications. I purchased them (she kept forgetting to pick them up) and then put them in weekly pill dispensers. This also help me know if she was taking the medication. Is she still driving? If so that is definitely something to keep a close eye on. I think this is a time to really monitor things closely. She asked for help with bills, but she may not be as willing when it comes to driving or not being safe to stay alone.

Everything that H1235 said. It's great that she can recognize her need for help with finances. Sad at the same time - every step down in the progression of dementia is a loss … but you know that already from your dad.

Hugs to you. I cannot imagine going this road with both parents, though from this forum it seems more common than I realized. I miss my dad, gone 15 years now from other health issues, but I have often thanked God that he is not here to witness the deconstruction of my mom's mind.
