Adjustable Bed?

DH will (hopefully) be coming home from rehab in the next few weeks. He’s recovering from a fractured tibia. PT is rough because he can’t follow direction well and doesn’t remember what they’re asking him to do. He is in distress every day here, and his anxiety and (growing) agitation is through the roof. But he is very slowly getting stronger. I would like to find an adjustable bed for him at home to make his care a bit easier there. I would prefer not to have a hospital bed; I’m concerned it might be a trigger for him since he’s so traumatized here. (I am also here for at least 12 hours every day and I am speaking with the clinical staff regarding meds for him multiple times daily. I do realize it takes time to adjust to new Rx therapies, but seeing him this way is traumatizing for me too. I think I’ve become THAT wife, in their face when necessary; they all cringe when they see me coming. 🤷‍♀️). I am doing some on-line research and am finding there are many beds out there that have adjustable head and legs, and many have other bells and whistles. But I’m hitting a roadblock on adjustable height, meaning the ability to move the entire bed frame up and down. Does anybody have any recommendation? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, thank you! (And thanks for reading through my embedded rant as well!)

I don't think such a thing exists. You're reinventing the hospital bed.

You could put the bed on risers to make bed baths and incontinence care easier, but that would increase the risk of injury if he fell from it.

If it's a matter of making it easier to get him in/out a sleep to stand bed would be an option.

No help with the bed but just want to say thank you for your positive rant. It’s so easy to be intimidated by institutions and authorities it gives me courage to (famous words) stand by my man because we are their lifeline, no one else really understands where they are at or the distress it can cause us. Let us know how you go with the bed and I do hope the home coming goes as smoothly as possible.

In no way do I want to minimize the stress of this time or the relief of going home, but the name for that type of bed is "hospital bed." They come in different designs and you might find one that looks different. You could also make it up with a bedspread and linens from home, and maybe put a throw over one of the side rails to make it look more homey, but you'll find more options searching the term "hospital bed."

My brother bought a hospital bed after his back surgery and slept in it for the rest of his life. He loved it. He could raise the back and read in bed, and make lots of other adjustments.
