my heart breaks for you and anyone else that has to deal with this nitmare at such a young age. We had great life and now that retired this illness I feel is easier to deal with when no young children and a mortgage to pay. I wish you the best and may God watch over you and your child.

See an attorney as soon as you can. Do not let the cost deter you, because waiting costs much more. If he is over 60 you can use the lawyers for the commission on aging or similar. You need DPOA, POA for healthcare. The DPOA will allow you to use banking and do his business for him.
You also need to file for disability as soon as you have a diagnosis. Ask the attorney about this.

Does he appear to be unaware of what's happening with him? He probably has anosognosia. This is a characteristic of dementia. But first he needs a thorough medical evaluation to search for medical causes of memory loss and loss of executive function. If he has dementia, you will not be able to rely on him to make rational decisions about finances and child custody.
