I need some ideas … my husband (with Alz) is urinating while standing up and is terrible aim! I am tired of cleaning pee from the toilet, the back of the toilet, the floor, etc. multiple times a day. Does anyone know of a product that would cover those areas?

The OT who came to assess my husband suggested getting one of those U shaped bathroom rug. I bought one from Walmart and another from Amazon. They are helping a lot. I just toss them in the washer every couple of days. I also keep Clorox wipes in both bathrooms to wipe the toilet and area down. It was causing me a lot of stress so I’m happy to have received these ideas.

other things that helped were an LED battery operated light on the toilet tank, night lights in the bathroom, and toilet bowl cleaner that turns the water blue, high contrast toilet seat in a bright color.

If he will use it, a male urinal works great. Sold for about $20 at Walgreens, it is essentially a wide mouth bottle with a lid. Insert penis, urinate, pour contents into toilet - can't miss. I keep one at my bedside to avoid leakage while walking to the bathroom.

I suggested DH try sitting, at first he said no, but several days later he realized he could sit more comfortably than wobbling trying to stand in middle of the night. He also had several episodes of thinking he was through, pulling up his pants and then there was a big wet spot all over front of pants. He was frustrated and embarrassed about it. I had bought some male pads, aka guards, but hadn’t tried to introduce them. I took his comment of frustration and said casually, “ oh,I have some pads we could try…” he agreed and has been using them ever since. Of course that means I am changing the pad and putting a new one daily for him.

Some men cannot empty the bladder completely when sitting. Upon standing a little more will dribble out. If this is the case, a technique is to grab some TP before you stand up and use it to catch the dribble. I realize there is a level of coordination and cognition required for this approach, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
