Sleeping so much

My DH, age 75, is in stage 6 Alzheimer's. He is still physically in pretty good shape, just mentally compromised. In the last month he's been sleeping 18 - 20 hours per day. Is this common? Does this mark a step toward the end of this road? He always says he is tired. He eats well (often only one meal per day because he sleeps so much). I wonder what others of you have experienced. His vitals are good.

My wife sleeps a lot. She is often awake only from 10 AM to 6 PM and eats two meals a day. She seems to need the sleep. I guess her brain gets tired.

is he losing weight? You may want to get a hospice evaluation. They help so much in so many ways. They can answer all your questions.

Sleeping 18-20 a day is very common in the later stages. My DW was in range of 18-20 hours of sleep starting about two years ago, she was 71. It was a major factor in her acceptance for hospice. Just before this stage she was active, fit and as healthy as one can be in that stage of dementia. After two years she is now in Stage 7f, and nearing the end, but her progression has been more rapid than most. She also does not have Alzheimer's but Semantic Dementia, a rare form of FTD.

DW sleeps 11-12 hours at night and 3-4 hours in the daytime. I thought it might be the anti-psychotic medication.
