Can anyone answer my question

My DH is in the late stages of AD and wets himself and his bed. I dont understand how someone who wont drink much fluid (less than 12oz a day) can wet through a pull up with a diaper over the top of it and the bed pads...its all soaked in the morning as if he drank a gallon of water. Can anyone explain this to me?

    Don't forget that there is water content in food. Perhaps he is drinking more than you realize - water when he brushes his teeth, eating watermelon, for example. I would investigate different brands of pullups to find something more absorbable. Good luck - the laundry can be absolutely overwhelming when our loved ones are incontinent.

    It can also be a sign of diabetes.

    Thank you, I guess I never realized even brushing his teeth would give him water. We are using depends brand pullups and diapers. I have used others, but the depends brand seemed to be the best.

    Thank you for letting me know. His mother had diabetes and his 3 siblings also have it. I guess I need to discuss this with his doctor.

    the bladder holds so much fluid. There is a company recommended on this forum and I think I remember someone posting that they will send samples to try. They have guards that you can put on him in addition to the briefs. Here’s the link to the company. You might be able to call them for help. https://www.northshorecare.com/shop-for/incontinence-products-for-men?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=10751482&gbraid=0AAAAAD_vIARgGmLmmjq_YTuGxnEvB5OjZ&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiqbBBhCAARIsAJSfZkbrm7xqtf7Yy9MVg0ko8y6o0LdZx8kUr1ToykoYhTyZbfWaWK1y61QaAvuUEALw_wcB

    @Bunny whisperer

    There are a lot of reasons and ways a person can flood their incontinence products and bedding overnight.

    It's not just about the water he drank before bed; his body is 60% water with kidneys filtering around the clock. As others mentioned, medications like BP and diuretics can increase urination. If he has any degree of edema in his legs, from say CHF, that fluid would drain and be excreted when he elevated his legs in bed. If something like this is an issue, it might be worth scheduling an overnight change to avoid the extra laundry daily.

    Your diapering strategy could be part of the problem. Both diapers and Depends have a waterproof outer cover. Doubling them is pointless but you may find a "diaper doubler" designed for this helpful. If you need more absorbency, maybe a product from Northshore or Parentgiving would be better.

    Another way things can go sideways is if the incontinence product isn't snugly fitted. This sometimes happens in later stages when PWD lose weight and the products gap especially around the legs. Aim can be a problem. When diapering, best to point the penis any direction but up. If your DH is prone to adjusting himself into a problematic position and onesie style sleep suit can help with that.

    Thank you thats good to know. He is only on Citalopram and Melatonin, but I can check with his doctor and see if either of these will increase urine output.

    Thank you for this information..we were just going on what a friend told us to do who works in a nursing home. She told us to do that because my husband would pull his pullup off and pee in the bed and this would make it harder for him to do so. I will check into those companies.

    My DH is incontinent too. I use Tena briefs on him which work well. I also use a fabric pad w/a plastic liner on the bedding as well as a disposable one on top. I noticed that the incontinence increases his chances of getting a UTI.

    I wash his soiled bedding with one cup of white vinegar and one cup of baking soda. Cuts through the urine smell, works well for me.

    FWIW, my wife's MCF prefers Prevail pull-ups. The women's version can be bought online by Costco members.
