Sleep pattern is a mess

my DH spent 3 nights in the hospital and returned home yesterday. While there, they gave him Seroquel at bedtime and it helped a lot with sleep. I could tell he had slept because when I saw him each day he was alert, upbeat, and didn’t nap at all during the day. A great relief because he wasn’t sleeping much at night when home. Last night I gave him the medicine at 9:00 p.m. as directed and he was up all night. You would think they were caffeine pills. I finally fell asleep on the couch for a couple of hours and awakened to find he had taken apart a really nice floor lamp and was looking for scissors so he could cut the cord. (It was still plugged in and he assured me it was safe). He usually sleeps for a few hours at night but not at all last night.

I hate to hire someone to be here overnight (because of the cost) since his sleep pattern is so unpredictable but last night scared me. I usually awaken at the slightest sound but I’m so exhausted that i slept through the commotion. He was literally 3 feet from me as he worked on the lamp.

Anyone else have this response to Seroquel?

What dose of seroquel? Perhaps the dose is too low.

I spoke with a nurse from the hospital who said that after 2 or 3 days of success this side effect can happen. Waiting for a call from doctors office to ask about dosage change or alternative meds.

My husband takes Remeron 15 mg at nighttime and he sleeps pretty well.

Thanks for all the input. Doctor suggested we keep trying the seroquel. He did sleep last night but he’s been sleeping for 12 hours now. He has done that in the past, before seroquel, but this morning he keeps trying to get out of bed, needs to urinate, but falls asleep before I can even respond. I want him to sleep but don’t want a zombie. I HATE WHAT THIS DISEASE IS DOING TO HIM!

He may have been exhausted from not sleeping for several days. Give the seroquel a chance.
