eye exam for late stage

My DW used to wear contact lenses. After EO ALZ diagnosis, she switched to wearing eyeglasses. Her prescription has expired. It is a matter of time before she breaks her current glasses. We barely made it through her last eye exam which was 2 years ago. How are people managing vision care and eye exams in the later stages?

Make sure the eye doctor understands. Could you order a spare pair with the old prescription in case one breaks? In the later stages many with dementia lose their glasses, break them or stop wearing them at all. They don’t read or watch TV anymore so really no need. Tough decision.

I also wondered about getting a spare pair for my DH using the current prescription - in a special case they may do that. I don’t believe an eye exam would be possible with him now based on how he was last time. But then he stopped wanting to wear his glasses. I try to encourage him when we’re watching TV or he’s doing something close up but I’m only successful one time out of 10.

I would encourage having a spare pair. You can get one inexpensively online if you have the prescription. I've used Zenni Optical.
DW regularly misplaced her glasses, then fretted. If I was unsuccessful finding them in "the usual places", I would take out the spare pair until the first pair showed up again, which they always did.

My DH glasses disappeared a few days after entering MC. I took his old pair and they, too, disappeared. After that, I bought him some reading glasses. They also disappeared. Now I keep a pair of cheap reading glasses in my purse and if he needs to read something while I’m visiting him, I give them to him and retrieve them before I leave. there’s no way he would be able to cooperate with an eye exam.

I order my eyeglasses online. They don't require a written prescription or anything. I just fill in what my prescription is.
