Hello my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia about 4 years ago we have noticed lately she is hallucinating a lot and wakes up cussing at anything and everything and constantly yelling and saying I hate you,I hope you die, I’m going to kill you , and throwing out racial slurs . But more recently she took a fall back in May and broke her leg and we feel like the fall and broken leg has really made it seem like the Alzheimer’s and dementia has gotten worse when before the fall she wasn’t like this at all . Has anyone experienced this with any of there parents or loved ones?

Welcome. So sorry about your Mom. Yes, hallucinations and delusions are common. Talk to her doctor about medications to help. Be specific about her behaviors. It will take awhile for the meds to work and the doctor may have to make changes to find the right combo. The best doctor to manage meds is a Geriatric Psychiatrist. Ask for a referral to one. Difficult to tell whether the fall made the disease progress faster or whether it’s normal progression. Every person with dementia progresses differently based on many factors, one of which is the area of the brain affected by the disease. Did she have anesthesia? Sometimes that does affect progression and they may or may not return to baseline. Read the book “The 36 Hour Day” which helped me after my DH’s diagnosis. Search online for dementia caregiving videos. Come here often for info and support.
