Palliative Care

Has anyone on this forum used Palliative Care? Was it helpful? My DH has unspecified Dementia, Bipolar disorder, ADHD, and hoarding. He lives in a very small assisted living. He is ambulatory, can shower and shave himself. He is often confused with delusions and hallucinations.

I have been wondering about palliative care for a while. My wife is in MC and they do pretty good but I would like another set of experienced eyes on her. I talked to a hospice place and didn't think they were a good fit. The MC facility she is in is having someone come in the 20th of August to give more information. I will be following this discussion to see what other say.

I do not currently utilize their services for my PWD, but I have recently broached the subject with my DM, both of us being nurses. She being the patient.

I believe she is in mid-stage 5. She excels at showtiming so most ppl have not yet been told of her diagnosis. However, mom is at the point where she is voicing more and more frustrations and annoyances with making 3-month follow-up visits with all her doctors. We will be talking about it again, in the near future.

Palliative care, not to be confused with Hospice, has their own set of protocols. Patients can continue seeing their PCPs and specialists, if they choose to, but are assigned a team of Palliative care team members. Many ppl are not aware that the only criteria required is you must have a life threatening/life shortening condition. You can receive care for years and years. Hospice is typically for end of life care, when death is anticipated to occur within 6 months or less.

All the best in your decision making!🙏🏽

Below is a link to a podcast I shared in a post about palliative care and hospice care. I found it to be very informative.

We have a home evaluation with a RN scheduled for tomorrow morning. By phone they advised 100% covered by Medicare and insurance, so I’m curious to see what they offer. I’ll try to update on the outcome.

The neurologist suggested this last Oct, we were not there yet, but I need some reinforcement now.
