DH is late stage 5 and into 6. Limited vision and quite unsteady. We have a shower with a built in bench, but to get into the shower he has to step over the border that goes around the floor. I am considering a remodel, but am interested in tips and practical suggestions on getting the shower done overall. Do you both get into the shower, then there are two wet bodies and limited space. …?

A moveable shower seat is better than a bench. A hand held shower wand is required. You may be able to seat him and work from outside, but expect to get wet.

Bed baths can be used instead if he can't get into the shower.

If you have space with the bench, could you consider a shower swivel chair? They're usually used to help get in/out of a bathtub, but I would think it would work for this purpose as well. Once he's over the border, you could remove it. Just a thought. And a lot cheaper than a remodel!

We have a renovated new bathroom at the moment it’s perfect. The shower is long no wall to climb over, flat entrance and slightly sloping tiled floor centre drain

for water run off. We shower together every morning. I have a moveable shower chair ready for the next change in circumstance. Easy to clean no door or wall. It works.

I can no longer bathe my DH either. It is too dangerous for both of us. My solution is disposable shower pads. They do not need rinsing; you just dry him off. I get him sitting in bed or on the toilet (if I can). It also gives me the chance to check for any sore or dry skin

Biggles, thanks for the photo and information….so you replaced an existing shower area?

Our shower area is not as long as what you have, but we could remove the current separate tub and that would offer a lovely space. Then I could turn the our smaller shower into a cabinet storage area. I'm thinking that would be soooo expensive, though….. Would you share, was it "thousand$" or was it "ten$ of thousand$?"

I am planning on removing the tub and getting a walk in. I have been told to expect to pay $30,000. Ouch, but it is a necessity….
