I’m so frustrated and scared

My DH has been doing fairly well but the last week he’s really failed. He had ear surgery and ever since has been so confused with delusion after delusion. He wet the bed last night for the first time ever and is refusing to wear depends tonight. He says he doesn’t need it. Can anybody suggest anything for tonight and also what the next step should be for meds? He’s been on Seroquel for several months and it’s been working great but all of a sudden he’s just off his rocker! Any help would be so appreciated.

Sorry I can’t be of much help. The only thing that comes to mind is put a barrier (pee pad) under the fitted sheet on his side of the bed to help with the mattress. I know from experience my DH will not cooperate if he’s set against what I’m asking. Quite often I walk away and try again later. I don’t have enough experience with meds, so can’t help with that. I do see though quite often people recommending anti-anxiety meds. I’m going to look into those for my DH. Sorry you’re going through this.

there are many posts on this forum about making the bed for incontinence. A mattress protector that the mattress slides in and zips shut to protect the sides of the mattress. 2 pads. One under the fitted sheet and one on top. I got the larger ones. To get him to wear depends some have replaced all their LO’s other underwear with depends. Get the ones that look like men’s underwear. You can search this forum at the top of the page for bed, etc and see other tips. I would talk to his doctor about his meds be sure to tell the doctor all the new behavior and that it started after his surgery. If he had anesthesia it could have caused a progression. If so, he may or may not return to his baseline.

My wifes incontinence started out only being occasionally, so I got some nice incontinence underwear for her and put them in her drawer along with her regular ones and slowly removed the regular ones and she just wore what was in the drawer. it was never discussed it was just what was in her drawer so she wore them. She was pretty easy to care for except for her delusions until she had a stroke then it was to much for me at home and she moved to memory care.

Could it be the Seroquel dosage needs to be increased? Our PCP recently upped the dosage for DW in stage 6, and it started helping immediately.

I would tell his doctor what is going on and see what he suggests with regard to meds. Unfortunately, anesthetic often makes dementia worse.

He may have some delirium from hospital/anesthesia/change in routine. It may be transient. That said, he may need his seroquel dose increased. It took nearly a year for the geriatric psychiatrist to find the optimum dose of seroquel for my DW. The dose would be increased and it would work for a while. Once she was on the optimum dose, she has not required any dosage increases (5 months so far).

Thank you all so much. Today was a much better day. Last night was uneventful. This is such a heartbreaking journey.
