My DH took me by surprise today. He cried one time in our marriage and thst was just for a second. He came in the bathroom and just burst into tears….. over the school shooting today in MN. Lips quivering and sobs. Never saw anything like this from him. Just shocked me. Another part of this dreaded disease, I guess.

My DW either gets very happy or starts to cry when she things that trigger each emotion. When she sees babies or small children, her face lights up with a big smile and she goes toward them. On the other hand, when she sees flashing lights from a fire truck or police car, she bursts into tears afraid that someone is hurt. We were watching the news on the shooting this morning and she got very emotional and cried only when she saw the lights on the police cars.

My wife and I had to stop watching the news. She became afraid that the Russians, the Israelis, or our own government would do to us what they were doing to others. The same was true of school shootings and other violent crimes. I guess PWDs lose the ability to distance themselves from the evil that men do.

the news caused my husband to have nightmares and hallucinations. We had to stop watching it. I streamed the news on my computer or phone and didn’t let him hear it.

Yes, my DH gets very distressed over the news, or violent TV shows, etc. I found an app that offers dementia friendly programming. It is called Zinnia. You download the app on computer, iPad, or smart TV. It provides a large variety of programs, some 5-10 minutes and others that last much longer.

Unfortunately, DH has such macular degeneration he can't see much TV and definitely can't see smaller screens. Our larger smart TV is 10 years old and won't load the app, but if you have a newer model check it out. Look up ZinniaTV.com

DH cannot watch any news. As the disease has progressed, he has required increasing calm input from his surroundings. Several months ago, there was a plane crash, and he was convinced our granddaughter was on the plane. That was the last time I put any news on TV.

In late Stage 6 now, we watch YouTube on television, mostly DogTV (he loves dogs!!!) and scenes of nature, national parks, oceans, mountains, etc. with calming music (really beautiful for me too!). We went through a period of watching Rick Steves and other travel programs (great suggestion by someone who posted it here!), but he is bothered by voices on TV now, probably with difficulty following the verbal narrative. He will occasionally watch ice skating, diving, etc. from previous olympics on YouTube. The positive with this programming is that anything violent can be avoided.

I try so hard to keep my husband from the news and doom and gloom. His paranoia comes out in full force. One day he wanted to order razor wire to protect our house. I told him I would look into it. Thank goodness he forgot about it.

sorry , my arthritis… to any kind of event. He’s just a very unemotional person, always has been. No ups or downs. So this was just so shockingly out of character that his friends would probably laugh at me if I told them. I wonder if we are progressing more now. Thanks everyone, as usual……💕💜
